Gothic Cathedrals and the Art of Melodrama by Mark Carver

As the seeds for The Age of Apollyon were taking root in my imagination, I read Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In addition to being a fantastic story, that book opened my eyes to the breathtaking marvels of Gothic architecture. I’d always been a casual fan of cathedrals (who isn’t?) but after finishing Hugo’s masterpiece, I was determined to incorporate the Gothic church and all of its accompanying melodramatics into my own writing.…

My Work In Progress "Attraction"

It's basically a story about my life, with a little twists and tweaks here and there. It wouldn't be interesting if I kept it straight to my life now would it?

More will be said on the subject as the publishing date rolls closer.

Happy Sunday!

Purple Phantoms debut Labor Day Weekend at AJC-Decatur Book Festival!

Good Afternoon,

I want to thank you for attending the debut of my fourth novel, Purple Phantoms.

Sometimes, you meet people who affect you and encounter experiences that change your life. When that encounter is with a young person, it is more intense and emotional.

As a high school varsity basketball coach, I experienced the…

Something on my Mind

You know how you get when you haven’t had something in a while. You start thinking about it all the time. Wondering, how will I get that? When will I get that?

That thing becomes an obsession.

I want it. No, I need it.

Luckily for authors, when we want something, all we have to do is write about it. Once the words are on the page, they are as good as real to us. That desire is fulfilled. We have gotten that thing we…

A Triangle of Blessings: Amish, Writing, and Readers

A guest post from Sarah Price

I was first introduced to the Amish when I was only eight years old. It was my grandparents who took me to Lancaster County, PA. I sat between them on the front seat of their Cadillac, bouncing up and down with excitement as we passed each horse and buggy.

My grandparents came from a long line of strict Old…

Time for a Change

A couple things have happened in the last month or so. They have me thinking about changes.

I really dislike change, even though I know sometimes, even most times, the new situation will be better. I’m resistant to jumping into the water without a net…or something to that effect.

The first thing was that my goofball landlord, who hasn’t deigned to take…

How Bad Do Customer Really Want Good Service Versus Price?

A husband and wife visit my store stating, “We hated the service across the street!” (I’ll refrain from mentioning the name of the big-box retailer they referred to out of respect). “The people there didn’t know anything about the products we want and behaved as though they weren’t interested in helping us.”

I introduced myself and asked if this was their first visit to my store. They said, “Yes.” After introducing myself I explained how we provided everything…

First time novelist.

Hi Everyone.  Wow this is a fantastic site, and I've learned so much already!  I just had my first novel published, mystery& suspense,  and I wish I would have known about authors.com before I self published.  Although the agency I'm with seems to deliver what they promise, I still wonder if I should have tried traditional publishing.  Would value any insights from anyone who has had success in self publishing!  Thanks Vicki

7 Ways to fix the economy

Anyone with half a brain can see that the U.S. economy is in a malaise.  It’s just muddling along.  Unemployment is still high.  Economic growth is low.  Prices are rising for goods and services (just think gas prices and food prices).  Job creation is low (people you know that have been unemployed are still unemployed).  Small businesses are still struggling to survive given decreased demand and tight credit.  The real estate market is in the tank; house prices are still falling…

Write, Read, but Live!

I hear a lot of writers say to be a good writer you have to write, read, write some more, and read some more, and then write a lot more, and read a lot more. This keeps the juices flowing, so to speak. Yes, I agree (in theory) with this, but in my lifelong ambition of becoming a published author I’ve learned a thing a two I want to share.

Writing is a writer’s joy. It’s our obsession (I know, I say this a lot!). It’s that other lover in our life we…

What Makes a Writer?

Really? What makes a writer a writer? This is a question I ask myself all the time. Anyone can be a writer, right? You’ve got pen and paper to place words on them but it’s more than that.  A college student can put an essay together but they aren’t necessarily writers. I believe my past experiences have made me into a writer.  I come from a Hispanic family that came to the United States for the dream America is so famous for.  This makes me the first-born generation in the United States…
