I agree with Robert Allen: "f you feel the need for an editor to edit your work, perhaps you need to revise again." An author needs a couple of Beta readers but she/he is the source, the Master of his/her work.

Catch a glimpse of the groundbreaking website that is putting well-deserving, upcoming authors before the world. These authors are teaming together with professional associate readers who in turn help get the word out regarding their favorite authors. Find out more about this lovely site at Janet Beasley's Blog  Thanks in advance for your shared enthusiasm and support for the authors you're about to discover!  ~Janet~

A beta reader is a person who reads a written work with what has been described as "a critical eye, with the aim of improving grammar, spelling, characterization, and general style of a story prior to its release to the general public."
The author or writer, who can be referred to as the alpha reader, may use several "betas" prior to publication.

You forget, though, that most writers have been aiming at the career of writing since they were in grade school, or near enough. I started writing only about 10 years ago or so and never gave it a thought before that. Oh sure, I liked those assignments where we were supposed to make up some story, but there was never any mention of becoming a writer from any of my teachers, never any push at all in that direction. In collage I took a poetry class and was completely flummoxed - I still don't understand it much; maybe I'd have started writing earlier if I'd taken a creative writing course then but there wasn't one and I needed the credit. I didn't start actually learning the writing craft until a couple years ago when I got internet - a full 2 years after I published my first book. I've been gleaning information from wherever ever since. I will never be 100% certain my writing is it's best so it will all go through an editor.

Beta readers - I asked a few days ago for readers on Facebook. I even stipulated some military background. By the end of the day I had 2 of them and I've already gotten some feedback. A third was just hungry to read. I look forward to what she has to say. I look forward to all of it. I wish I'd had a reader before I published my book.

I just posted on my status that I was looking for readers. They were among my friends there. I'd be happy to read your work too, if you like. I'm kinda stalled at the moment in my own work.

I disagree with Anna, only when it is perfect. You have worked too hard and too long to close your eye and hope for the best. Make it the best and then send it out.

You must be your own editor. More power to you.

Anna, I hope I didn't hurt your feelings. I learn from you all the time.
