Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers

Hi everyone. My name is Ben and I'm a new member. I'm really excited to meet everyone and to have the opportunity to view everyone's work.

The reason I created this discussion is because I'm looking for someone that is interested in writing my sci-fy story, "Zeron". It's an exciting and adventurous story, but I lack experience and skills in writing. So, if you are interested, you can take a look at a preview of my story at www.createspace.com. You can find it in the sci-fy / fantasy previews by clicking on "Review New Work" under "Member Spotlight".

Before you finish reading I want to say that I don't want this to be completely about myself, so if you have a book, or are writing one, tells us the title of your book and where we can find it below so we can read it and give you feedback. Or feel free to tell me a little about yourself.

Thank you all for reading.

Hey Benjamin are you sure you don't want to write this story yourself? I know a strange question as otherwise you wouldn't be asking for someone to write it for you. But the thing is the only way you will gain experience and the skills as a writer is to write. What you could always do is to get a Dictaphone and record your story into it then write it up or get someone to do that for you if necessary. Just a thought before you hand it over to someone completely. Best of luck to you. April

Hey April. Nice to meet you. I really appreciate your advice and kindness. I hadn't considered these options, but you've really helped me a lot. Thank you very much.

I'm glad I could help. It can be scary writing your novel but it is exhilerating and freeing as well. Also your characters came to you to tell their story so they believe in you and now you just have to take that final step. Remember there is no right way to tell a story there is only your eay. Best of luck and let me know how you get on please :-) April

If you have a story already at CreateSpace, why don't you go ahead a publish it? As far as lack of skills and experience, learn. I did. I now have five books up on Amazon and one I did all by my lonesome through CreateSpace. One place I went to where I learned tons is YouWriteOn.com. It's a contest where the winner gets published. Or at least it was when I was last there - it's been a while. Anyway, the feedback there was totally awesome, and I made some lasting friends through there too.

Hi April

You are SO right about this. It builds confidence too. I have novels self published and my sister helped edit.

I found that as I progressed -writing myself- the more confident I got. My husband bought me this little dictaphone from a cheap shop- not sure if I can say which one!- and it really does help if you can read your work ALOUD on the editing... it helps you realise where you need pauses, commas, where you might have missed a word or misused a word.

Hoping to hear from you all.. just joined myself!

Hey Linda welcome and I'm glad that you have been successful in your writing let us know what you write so we can read your books. I always love reading new authors :D

Hello April

Good to hear from you. I wouldn't say I WAS successful- few books sold. I was looking too at the write ups about the marketing offered and mine here in UK was pretty lousy.. self advertising is so hard! I had a list of contact and the publishers sent one email regarding my press releases but I never got to see what they sent. I had to do a follow up letter but now doubt whether there was any original contact.. there is no proof that anything was sent. I did get a couple of mentions in a magazine due to MY letter but there was no review on either book which didn't help. I write light romances.. they are available on amazon website- Smiths and Waterstones- two local book shops did have them on their websites but not for long- too  many boks coming onto the market! OUR BREAD AND BUTTER was the first.. TELLING DREAMS.. also on e book- JACK and JUST THREE GIRLS- also e book- a 2 in 1 and my latest is TO GULLS' REST.

If you look on the website there is some descriptions there.

Hope to hear from you again with what you write.

Kind regards

Linda

Have you thought about going straight to a publisher? Try Avon Romance books, Samhain Publishing and The Wild Rose Press though with most of them you will have to take down your self published books as they will only have their copy of it. Or your next book submit it to one of these book publishers without self publishing it. Also if your on twitter advertise your book there as we will all re-tweet it and check it out as well. Also Goodreads is a great place as you can put up an author page with your book links. Hope this helps. April

Give it a try yourself first. You might be surprised.

Hello April:

It can be scary writing a novel, is an understatement, lol!

I began writing poetry in 1983. I began writing short stories in 2002.

I never believed for a moment I could or might one day write a novel. It just seemed like one of those goals I would never accomplish, like one day bungee jumping, lol!

But miracles do happen and in every person I believe a book awaits being written.

The challenge facing each of us is "How do we unlock the door' and write it?

My advice is for someone wanting to write a book, to enroll in a college creative writing class, or just sit in on the class, which most instructors would be happy for you to take a chair. You'll sit next to people who write poetry, short stories, hope to write a novel or already writing one. You'll be inspired I assure you. Others will be happy to answer your questions, give advice and help you polish your skills.

I guarantee I would have never written one book had I not taken three creative writing classes.

No, I didn't know back then that I would write a book let alone many.

Life is full of forks in the roads friends.

One path leads you to somewhere and the other fork does too. But each path takes you to a different destination.

Which path will you choose?
