Essence, Most of my character have a little of me in them, even the females. Sometime I write parts of my wife in them also. Not so much physical but rather personality.

Welcome Essence! My main character, in some ways, is actually my alter ego lol She's an ace reporter who lands herself in sticky situations while getting her stories (many years ago I had aspirations of being a top notch reporter though never followed through) She's fun, quirky, confident and has two best friends willing to jump in and join on any fun thing she has cooked up. I think intertwining yourself in your characters is an eventuality we all end up with. Write what you know. Who knows yourself better than, well, yourself? :0)

Essence - All of my main females in my story have large bits and pieces of me in them.  You need to know what you are right, correct?  How can you know anyone better then yourself???  Good luck!

Hi Essence - good to have you here. As far as my characters, they're a mish-mash of me and often times get to do things I only wish I could do. I enjoy watching them develop as I write my novels - it's really fun.

Keith, I've seen software that help with writing but I didn't keep the links. They searched for over use of common words, for passive sentences and other such common weaknesses. I've kept a list of interesting details of that sort pertaining to my own weaknesses on my website for others to maybe get help from. My thought on using software is like using a crutch - it's better if you try to learn your own weakness, that way you improve.

I have found an editor who only charges a penny a word, or that's what she charged me. She gives estimates though. http://crystalclearproofing.blogspot.com is her blog and it's a great blog. From there you can find her website and contact her about an estimate. She's such a wonderful person to work with.

Software is way to generic. You really should have a person involved. There's nothing like a real brain behind a fresh pair of eyes. And a penny a word, I haven't heard of an editor who is cheaper.

REVISE, REVISE, REVISE... Then revise again. If you feel the need for an editor to edit your work, perhaps you need to revise again.

Thank you everyone for your helpful advice! This makes me feel so much better because i always felt like i was doing it wrong, making my main character like me. Thank you!

Neither do the rest of us. At some point you have to close your eyes and push it out into the world.
