Where can an author go to have book covers made at a reseasonable price ? I want to  be able to come up with a cover for my third novel.

for my children's books, I allowed my publishers and illustrator to come up with the covers....and they did a good job. It didn't cost me anything extra.  My publisher  had someone who worked with me for my first novel.....that person sent me looking at certain web sites for pictures to see what I liked...and I chose several that appealed to me and they narrowed it down to three they thought would work well and the final choice was mine.....they didn't charge me anything.  For my e-book...I paid a woman to do a cover for me but for some reason, Book Baby could not use the picture that was used....but they took the idea and found one that did work and they charged me their usual fee of $149 to make the cover....

A friend of mine uses someone she found on Mark's list from Smashwords...they guy charges her $50 a cover....and has done several for her.  If you do a search...communicate with several of the people who answer and find out what they have done and how much they charge.  I think communication  is the key.  You may have to talk to several to find one that sees things the way you do.

My publisher - http://www.buckscountypublishing.com/portal/CoverDesign.aspx - provides covers for independent writers too. For eBooks it ranges from $50 to $200 with a non-refundable $25 deposit. For print books it ranges from $75 to $300 with a $30 deposit. The range covers several different types and at the link you can find examples.

Deal directly with a recommended artist.  I recommend Mariya - please go to http://www.txgroup.org/App/Tools/36-Transmedia-Press.html and post a comment or click on her to send her a message.

She is the best I ever work with.

how much does she charge?

My first book was done by Publish America they did a nice cover but that was about the only nice thing I can say about them.  I plan to try Create Space for the next book they have a good price point and very cheap shipping costs.

I am going through create space but I have my own idea of how I want my third book to look like.

I noticed that Create Space offeres a wide range of options If you have your own ideas they will try to create a cover based on your input or you can send in your own cover art.  At least their price is low.

Hi, I am new to this but I used www.etsy.com.  There are many great indie artists, some who offer e-book cover designs.  Most range between 10.00 and 75.00.  Also, if you see a graphic artist that doesn't have "ebooks" for sale you can contact them and see if they could do one for you using their graphics and/or designs. Good luck!

Nicki:  Thanks for your input.  I know that finding a person gifted enough to caputre what is in my mind is not easy.  Now I know there is a place to find different styles of art work.  After all a good looking cover is part of getting a person to even consider readingg the book.

For my covers, I originally hired out to a friend of artistic talent, but that wasn't anywhere near as satisfying as what I finally decided upon. Photoshop. I've found that taking pictures and then doctoring them up in photoshop was the most satisfying method in that I was the only one who knew what I wanted, and I got to learn a lot about photoshop (I actually have a linux computer and use the Open Source version of Photoshop, called GIMP).

This day and age, the in thing seems to be just classy photography with a little bit of touch up. I'd say try out the photoshop thing, and then if you don't like it, fork out the dough for an artist.

Yeah, I'm going to have to look into that someday.

MotherSpider.com has 3 years of experience in designing ebook covers.  Website says $89, although if you mention you are from Authors.com you will get $20 off. ;)
