On Writing - An Understanding of What a Book Editor Does

This is the final leg of what has become an unintended trilogy on the book editing profession, and while it might appear to be blantantly self-promoting, I hope it at least will shed a little light on the book-doctoring discipline.

A Need for Definition

A few months ago I published an article I was asked to write that explained the different phases of book editing: critiques, copy/line editing, and developmental editing. I also provided a range…

When Not to Hire a Book Editor

Here is an article on When Not to Hire a Book Editor, since on Authors.com I recently posted an article on When is the Right Time to Hire a Book Editor, and I thought readers might appreciate an opportunity to consider the flip side, of which there most assuredly is one. So here is the article, and I hope those of you will find the information to be of some…

Tips on How to Write Publishable Material - Understanding Point of View

Please note before reading this piece that it is lengthy, almost 1500 words. But since the agents, publishers, and other professional editors I know feel that Point of View is not a subject to be taken lightly, I decided it should not receive short shrift.

What prompted me to address POV at this time is that I recently read a scene that contained four POV shifts, and when I brought this to the author's attention, I was told this was the intent. And it was explained to me in no… Continue

Regarding Showing vs. Telling

I mentioned in my first post for Authors.com that by far the most hits I received during the past year were for articles I had written that pertained to finding a book agent. But there also was substantial interest in what I wrote regarding Showing versus Telling, so I have combined two articles for this post.

Also, if anyone has any comments on anything I post, please let me know. I have wide shoulders, and if you don't agree or understand where I'm coming from, please tell me. And… Continue

Tips on Finding an Agent for a Novel - How a Query Letter Differs from a Synopsis

Hello, and let me first state how excited I am about this site. Kay Elizabeth, the editor of The Cuckleburr Times, recently brought Authors.com to my attention, and I'm always thrilled when I find a site dedicated solely to serious writers or people with a penchant for reading.

As a full time novelist and editor, unfortunately, I don't have the time I would like to be able to spend with chat rooms, etc., but I will certainly try my best to answer anyone's questions. Just understand… Continue
