Hi Jock! Cheap is open to interpretation.  :) If it's an ebook cover you want, you can find ebook cover designers on fiverr.com and pay $5 for one. Doesn't mean it will be good though, so look carefully at their samples.

There's a thread where members are showing off their book covers. If you see a style you like there you could always contact the member and ask who did it for them if they haven't said.

yes thank you, its for an e-book a colleague of mine is launching. i will have a look. I obviously would like to pay more for it, certainly not a fiver more like 50 -100 bucks.
There are many illustrators out there who will likely accept a good price for a single piece of artwork. Just search for illustrators (I personally am a fan of Boris Vallejo) and ask them how much it would cost to commission them when you find one with an art style you like.
I do quite a bit of 3d design with characters and landscapes. If you want to send me your idea I can give it a go. I don't do the money thing, it's just for fun.

You can see some of the artwork at google's photo site under mitchej0 to get an idea of what I do.

Just make sure your artist doesn't use images they don't have permission to use freely or you could run into copyright issues. If you were to add a description of the book cover style you're envisaging here, you may get some willing to attempt it like Justin. Many writers like to use other creative mediums. You could always work out a price with them later.

You can find a couple of good ones there too, don't get me wrong. And you can find some who suck too. You'd be surprised what you can get cheaply as many are from foreign shores.

Deviantart.com has many fabulous artists that do commission work if it's an illustration you want. If you go to Flickr and search "illustration" you'll find plenty there too.
