Poetry is a fun exercise for amateurs but just because your mother likes it doesn't make it good. Too many "poets" try to launch a career based on the opinions of loved ones.

Here's an article on six things your mother doesn't know about writing poetry.

Our moms love us so of course they are biased about anything we do. That's what makes places like this so essential. You need to be able to get opinions from people that aren't emotionally invested. You get an honest opinion.

The advice about reading aloud is very important. You can see where your poem falls down. Clue: it's where your tongue does. :)
Mwahahaha!!!
One woman I met who fancied herself God’s gift to poetry came into a class I was attending. Her work was awful. The teacher suggested that she study the writing of great poets and she declined the advice saying, “I wouldn’t want their writing to influence my pure style.” She didn’t finish the class for the same reason I suppose. I sure hope we didn’t inadvertently besmirch her purity.

Is she freakin serious!!! That's hilarious!!
I know, it's unbelievable isn't it! I've heard so many say something like that so many times though that it's not even funny to me anymore. How can you ever expect to learn from the greats if you don't read them? Crazy attitude but sadly all too common. And I've yet to see any of them succeed by any measurable degree. The ones that do are the ones that are willing to learn.
