Are You Ready for a Shiloh Shepherd?

Dog ownership can be fun and rewarding – but it can also be confusing and frustrating, especially when you get a new puppy home and you’re not sure exactly how to raise and train it. Different breeds have specific needs, and in The Beginner’s Guide for I.S.S.R. Shiloh Shepherd Owners, Steve Mekkelsen Madden generously shares the wealth of knowledge he has acquired from owning and showing these exceptional dogs. You’ll find answers to these questions and more: • What is the best type of food for the Shiloh Shepherd? • How do I teach basic commands to my new puppy? • How should I handle my Shiloh Shepherd with other dogs in a show ring? • How can I adjust to respond to my dog’s particular temperament? • What are common medical issues with this breed? The product of years of hands-on experience, and countless conversations with the breed founder, other breeders, and many Shiloh Shepherd owners, this book gives you the A-Z of how to be the best dog owner you can be. While many of the tips and tricks in this book are useful for any breed, this is an invaluable resource for Shiloh Shepherd owners, who may find it difficult to find breed-specific information when they need it. The Beginner’s Guide for I.S.S.R. Shiloh Shepherd Owners puts you a step ahead, and will remain a trusted source of information for years to come.

Steve, I have a question. I like German Shepherds but to my knowledge (and I could be wrong here!), they aren't good around strangers. I guess that's why many use them as guard dogs. That always made me feel a little apprehensive of the breed much as I think they are beautiful and very smart dogs.

What's the difference between them and Shiloh Shepherds and does the Shiloh Shepherd have that kind of temperament? I worry about aggression in dogs generally.

Hi Kay, I posted on your other comment, but there are a few differences.

1. Intelligence of a 3 yr old child

2. Less than 1% Hip Dysplasia compared to German Shepherds 50%+

3. Bred for Companion and Service, not for guard and attack

4. Little to no aggression (we have a zero tolerance for any aggression) and all ours are taught that from a puppy and we "require" training for the puppy and human owner.

5. They make excellent watch dogs as they are very alert and learn very quickly

6. Training is much faster as they are an intelligent breed

7. They are much larger.  Our smallest female is 27" at the withers and that's generally larger than the male German Shepherd.  Females 26-30" and 90-110 pounds, Males 30-34" and 110-140 pounds.

Hope that helps.  One thing I try to educate people on is about aggression.  Aggression can be virtually eliminated if the dog is properly socialized as a puppy and adult.  Without the socializing, they will be afraid and can appear to be aggressive when they are just scared which can result in biting.  So we always say, SOCIALIZE...SOCIALIZE...SOCIALIZE.  You can never socialize your dog enough!  :-)
