I thought I sensed something near,

As I walked through the thickness of the forest.

As if my eyes were walking behind me,

Following each step I took.

I suppose I was just reflecting back

On some old Hitchcock films.

The sun filtering through the giant pines

Must surely be that stairway to heaven

I have been searching for.

I find myself being drawn to it

But me feet wont begin the climb.

And that feeling of being watched remains with me.

A blanket of black has covered my stairway

And the forest seems so much larger

In the darkness of fright.

I am trembling as I sit on a moss covered stump

Reaching into my pocket for a much needed smoke.

Only to discover an empty pack.

Sleep then, until the daylight and the return of my stairway

So I may try again to climb the endless stairs.

I awoke to my stairway calling to me

Like the call of a mermaid to a sailor at sea.

I opened my eyes to see my mom smiling down at my ageless face

Comforting like only a mother can

After an eight year olds bad dream.
