I really don’t know why or how, but I have gotten a slew of deep, thought provoking novels lately, “Tribulation Point”  is another one. I want to get right to the synopsis of the novel:

“Abandoned at birth, conceived from a vicious assault on her mother, left on the steps of an orphanage, Precious must also face many other trials from her past. Teased and mocked by the children in the orphanage, she is called "half-n-half." She finds her first love only to lose him. Her second love turns out to be something totally different from what she expected, another disappointment. The third time appears to be the charm until new obstacles surface within this relationship. Other misfortunes occur which she must face and conquer as she forges her future and overcomes her tribulations in life.

Also touched by life's uncertain events, James, Precious' son, learns that life is not always so easy. He encounters his own despair, suffering, disappointment, and a dashing away of part of his dreams to shape his own future. He is finally forced to reveal a long-kept childhood secret to an unsuspecting friend. He continues to evaluate his relationship with a long-time friend who has become a dangerous person with the potential of jeopardizing the safety of James' entire family. “

The material covered in the novel is deep and cutting. To say that this ride is as good as any rollercoaster ride I have been on is understatement. Ricci Lane goes deep into the mind and provides us with a social commentary not many would dare make, or attempt. That is part of the power of this novel, its strength in the face of adversity and how it deals with it, how it describes it, and how the characters arrive at the answers they seek or avoid them.

“Tribulation Point” is not a novel I would suggest for everyone. If you are looking for a challenge, something that may make you look hard at yourself in the mirror when finished reading it, challenge your thought system and core beliefs, make you take pause and ponder the many different viewpoints of the characters then go ahead, enjoy this novel, I did. I applaud the risk takers and those that try to stretch the fabric of storytelling. I think that if Ricci Lane watered down his novel to make it more mainstream, more middle of the road, he would have lost his voice and the novel would have just been a cookie cutter version of itself.
