"Don't worry, Jude. I'm right here," Darius comforted me as we walked up the stairs to German class, “And don’t worry if you cry. I’m pretty sure no one will make fun of you. It’s hard for anyone to hear about this stuff.”
“I know. I’ll be OK.” we entered the classroom. When we sat down, Darius held my hand. Herr Krueger came over to say something to me.
“Jude, if you don’t want to watch this video we’re watching today - I understand. It’s about what happened in the, uh. . . . Concentration camps. You can go sit outside and read or something,” Herr Krueger explained.
“No. I’ll be OK.”
“OK. But if you have a meltdown,” he spoke in a whisper now, “I’ll give an automatic detention to anyone who laughs. I’m on your side.”
“Thanks, Herr Krueger,” I gave him a gentle smile of gratitude. Herr Krueger walked over to his computer and put the DVD into his computer, which was hooked up to the Smartboard, so we could watch the movie on a bigger screen.
I remember blurred vision, tears streaming down my face, and Darius holding me, desperately trying to calm me down.
