Follow up books/series

Ok, so I'm wondering how to lead into my second book.  I wrote my first book back in 1993 and finally had it published in 2005.  I didn't realize at that time that my first book needed more fillers.  But so far everyone I've talked to that has read the first one loves the story and keeps asking me to do a follow up book.  I started working on it, and I have a bit of the idea on where
I want the book to go, but I also want to make sure that I fill this book with more substance.  I'm hoping to get some ideas on how to build my characters and surroundings.  Any suggestions or ideas on character building would be greatly appreciated.
