Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers

As I am new here, it would be quite useful to have a tidy and ordered introduction as to who I am and what I do. This is especially true since, as a publisher, I do things a tad different than others and do not wish to be misunderstood in any way.

So let's start with some non-business type information. I, Kyle Davis, am an author, artist, programmer, and of a few other oddball professions. I'm always interested in learning new things and have found that such an attitude is very constructive towards creativity. Science Fiction may be my ultimate favorite genre but I actually enjoy all genres. I'm also open to a lot of different forms of writing and I believe that there is beauty in variety. Since I myself am an author, I understand what it's like to want to be published and all the sweat, blood, and tears involved. (And I'm still going through that while I toil away in writing my own books.)

I make an active effort to understand the needs of those around me, which is a big reason why I got into publishing in the first place. Though you might say that I take a very unique spin on the profession. I'm interested in what both authors and readers want when it comes to art and literature and I'm very interested in how that applies to the real world.

So, having said that, let me explain what it is that I do. I run Kaeru Digital Internet Publishing as a means for authors to sell their work professionally online. That means selling a digital book or ebook. For readers, it means being able to read a book on the website or download an offline copy in HTML or EPUB. Now that I've mentioned EPUBs, I should say that authors are indeed allowed to create and sell their own custom-formatted ones. Again, I'm interested in what readers and authors want so I'm very open to their interests.

Books are sold in sections through open contracts. If you don't know what that means then I will explain in detail because it is very important for you authors out there. The publishing service I provide allows authors to keep the full intellectual property of their work and does not force them to use only Kaeru Digital. Books are sold in parts or sections of at least 25,000 words. What that means is that an author can choose to self-publish physical copies of their books and sell digital copies online through Kaeru Digital as a means of promoting their work.

Let me give an example, since those tend to be quite useful. Suppose an author, Jim Gray, wants to publish his book, The Silver Eagle, in physical form. Not much surprise there since many authors resist ebooks and want to publish physical copies. Now, Jim will probably have to pay out of pocket with some printing business to get some initial copies to sell. That matter is entirely his own choice. But it would be useful if he had some kind of online listing because it would help promote his work - perhaps provide some book information or contact points. It would also be useful to have some way in which potential readers could acquire a small portion of The Silver Eagle to interest them into buying a physical copy.

That's basically what I do as a publisher over at Kaeru Digital. I'm all about helping authors. But I'm also about helping readers because the advent of strong DRM has been making it difficult to get open and legitimate digital copies of the books they want.

This is not a blog post for advertising but rather an introduction as to who I am and what I do. I'm here at Authors.com as a publisher to connect openly with authors, readers, and just about everyone. So drop a line if you want to talk.
