In the deepest hour of the night
I hear the Raven speak his piece,
"Absence comes before the light;
Without the absence, light does cease."
As I call out for the mocking bird who speaks of absent light,
And groping hands experience an inky, midnight Hell,
I find I whisper amidst my fright
To no one but myself.
