The world's your oyster, Don. :) You can do both! There's a Group devoted to Poetry where you can find other poets too and read their work. Just go to the Groups tab.

Hey Don.
All of the above, my friend. Reading is a must for a writer. Learning is our continuing education, both about technique and industry standards. Making friends is networking, getting to know folks who can facilitate the aforementioned two endeavors.
I've always found that writing a poem is helpful to my work in many ways. Once I have penned a poem out, I find myself seeing inside of it nuggets of inspiration for perhaps larger, more complex works. Poems are like polaroids, in a way; they are snapshots taken from your psyche and put out there quickly, nearly at the moment they are crafted. Really wonderful ones will indeed attract attention and the market is still solid. Folks will always like fine words, in whatever form.
As to your simmering book: write on! Don't stop. Write, write, write! Even if you feel you have nothing to say of day, write something. You may find, in retrospect, that what you had written has power and potential. Also, the exercise and discipline are necessary if you wish to be published.
My best,
M.
