Hi. I'm a member of Authors.com, too. I'm promoting one of my books now and giving awards (including $500 cash). You can check it out at http://authorpromo.webs.com I'll look forward to hearing from you. I try to add to my blogs on the website so check back every once in awhile. Thanks.
Regarding self-publishing, I did self-publish my first novel, but couldn't afford to do that with my second and third novels. But I did go with PublishAmerica (now StarBooks). No matter what an author does, it falls on him or her to work the promotion and marketing almost completely alone. That even goes for traditional publishers for new authors. The thing about Star Books is, you don't pay any fees to get published.
Need help promoting/marketing your book? Maybe I can help. I've just had my latest novel published and am running a contest. Check out my website - http://authorpromohelp.webs.com - and read about it. I'm giving away a Kindle reader just for signing up and a $500 reward for my earlier novel, No Sad Songs. Let me know what you think.
