Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers

I am a poet, writer and blogger, and I tend to publish or post three or four times a week. That sounds like I'm bragging, but I'm not. Poetry can publish all the time, and I'm trying to promote a couple of  upcoming novels and to create a brand. The thing is that I want to support those places that have my work, but at the same time, I don't want to annoy facebook friends and email friends.

So my question is how often should someone promote and where? How often do you do it? When does it become annoying?

I guess that's 3 questions, but they come down to the same thing.

It's very hard to quantify as we're all different. Most people and sites I follow I get email notifications of their new posts. If there's more than two a week, and ideally I'd prefer one a week, I unsubscribe. I do feel that I'm on the less tolerant end of the scale though simply because I do subscribe to many sites and dislike feeling that one person is overpowering my inbox. Others may find that too little engagement for their tastes. Good question!

That makes a lot of sense and then that raises the question of how to bring people to our sites when we're promoting a lot. Too much direct marketing is annoying especially among friends, but we still want people to know we're doing something so we can market our books.
