Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers

My first book was picked up last year and I had to agree to a few minor 'tweaks." My editor did a lot of critiquing but never in a constructive way. She made me change both of my  main characters' personalities because she didn't like them. And when I told her I no longer recognized the story as my own she told me she only liked the concept and to have it in print I had to completely reconstruct the manuscript.

I did contact a few authors before pulling out from the deal because this didn't seem normal and I almost lost my passion for writing. It's a lot more difficult to write a story someone else wants you to tell.

I was just curious if anyone else has come across an editor like this, and if so what did you do?
