From Bad to Good-Technical and Academic Writing

Academic and technical writing are far different than literary writing, such as novels and poetry. The primary purpose of academic and technical writing is to provide information about a defined topic to a specific audience. Whether you write graduate papers, professional journal articles, dissertations, white papers, manuals, websites, reviews, or similar documents, you are writing academic or technical documents.

Academic and technical writing can be bad writing. They can…

The Most Common Grammar Mistake

The most common grammar mistake involves the ability to count. Fortunately, you only have to be able to count higher than 1.

If I write, “A man buys a house,” you can count the number of men: 1.

If I write, “Men buy houses,” you need to count higher than 1 because this sentence describes more than 1 man.

Now, let’s look at these two samples more carefully.

In the first sentence, “A man buys a house,” the subject is 1 man, described as “a man.” The verb “buys” ends…

Little Boygium-Wonderful Experience

Have you ever tried to achieve something positive in the community and instead of help and encouragement, one becomes a subject of ridicule and laughter? How would you feel when face to face you see yourself in a storm of laughter because one tries to raise money towards the publication of his book? It's the most saddest day in the writer's life as he faced all these degrading chapters in his life, yet he wasn't discouraged to publish this book.

"Little…

Author Promoting vs. Author Networking

The number one rule for authors is to network with other authors.  I have been informed numerous times that authors who resist others in the field, often disappear.  What’s the best way to network?  Find someone smarter than you. It's the only way we will learn and/or grow.…

Comma with “Including” Changes the Meaning

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Where you add or leave out a comma can change the meaning of a sentence.

Let’s look at a news story I read this morning to learn how a comma before “including” changes the meaning of the sentence. In this example, I think the writer left out a comma, thus communicating something that probably isn’t true.

“The Chicago Teachers Union has [sic] announced that it will send a bus to the 50th Anniversary March on Washington, a…

Julius Thompson New Video Blog Series!

For the first time in my life, I’m stepping out on a limb and putting myself out there in a video. In fact, it is a video blog.

       Nervous!

You bet, but I feel this is the next step in the evolution of the marketing of my books: A Brownstone in Brooklyn, Philly Style and Philly Profile, Ghost of Atlanta and Purple…

Strategies for Writing Concise Descriptions

Concise writing is clear writing. By definition, concise writing communicates in as few words as necessary. Everything in a sentence other than the subject, verb, and object is description. Descriptions cause most of the “fluff” in sentences, but, fortunately, some simple strategies will help you write concise descriptions.

Simplifying…

A personal writing tip from my blog

How to overcome writers block - part one

One of the most notorious things to knock a writers confidence is when they come up against the phenomena known as ‘writers block,’ and having experienced this myself - it stinks. This can make or break someone’s career as a writer because the more you fight against it, the more your succumb to its power to hold you.

The…

The Hero in All of Us

Most of the characters in my scifi novel are people I grew up with or became friends with in real life.  This made describing the characters in the book eaiser.  I know how my friends would react in different situations, what they would say or how their body would move during a conversation.

Now my friends might not like the responsiblity I put on them in my award wining scifi novel, traveling to another planet and training to fight the aliens that invaded earth but..., well I'm the…

Camera Shy_June 2011

For the life of me, I cannot understand why I continue to pay the fees for Craft Shows when I barely make table.  (That's the cost you've got to pay just to be AT the show.)

The reason for wanting to work with my hands is because I believe my writing isn't 'good enough' for publication.  I've been writing my entire life, mostly in personal journals no one ever sees.  In those rare instances I've allowed a piece of me to escape, many are impressed.

A friend…

For the writer who wants to learn a bit more about writing.

This is just a quick shout out to those of you who, like me, know they need a little more schooling on the subject of writing before they actually write a book, and who don't really feel college is right for them. It may not be for everyone, but it's an option; right now I'm in the middle of taking Penn Foster's Freelance Writering course, and I have learned a LOT already.  Two of my family members have also done Penn Foster courses, and so I've seen that it's a extreamly helpful coraspondance… Continue

On Writing - An Understanding of What a Book Editor Does

This is the final leg of what has become an unintended trilogy on the book editing profession, and while it might appear to be blantantly self-promoting, I hope it at least will shed a little light on the book-doctoring discipline.

A Need for Definition

A few months ago I published an article I was asked to write that explained the different phases of book editing: critiques, copy/line editing, and developmental editing. I also provided a range…
