HAVE THEM EATING OUT OF YOUR HANDOUTS

One of the complaints I often hear from authors is that they can't seem to get their signings and book info into the pubic eye through the local newspapers. I don't have that problem and I have taught several organizations in my area a few ideas on how this is accomplished.

I once was a lowly paid newspaper reporter. I remember days of looking for feature pieces to fill up the…

Flyte : Had A magical Entertaining Start, But Sadly Loses Direction

Flyte : Had A magical Entertaining Start, But Sadly Loses Direction

Okay this time around the book is Flyte by Angie Sage. And yes this is the one of cheesey wizards fantasy books that is only founding the colorful kids section of book stores. It’s two inches thick and made to look like spell book and neighbors Lemony Snicket and James and The Giant peach. But you know what, I‘m not going defend myself any or cover up the truth. I every once and a whole will read a kid book. I will…

Reading and Inspiration

Recently, I received an email asking me what I read and what influences me?
With a full time job in the wonderful world of retail sales and a beautiful daughter growing faster than a weed in the spring, I feel like I barely have time for anything else.
These days, I try to squeeze in a story from some of the very talented authors here at Trestle Press: Karen Vogel, Sarah Price, Crystal Linn & Roger Rheinheimer (sorry for not listing them all – there’s too many).…

Irony and Poetic Justice

Is It Ironic?

Case 1. You’re walking down the street with a friend. Ahead of you, you see a man stumble on a crack in the sidewalk. Your friend laughs at the man. A moment later, your friend trips on the same crack. “Oh,” you say, “that’s so ironic!” No, it isn’t. That’s not ironic.

Case 2. Later, you go home and turn on the television. You see a news story about a politician getting hauled into court for lying under oath. That same…

Gothic Cathedrals and the Art of Melodrama by Mark Carver

As the seeds for The Age of Apollyon were taking root in my imagination, I read Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In addition to being a fantastic story, that book opened my eyes to the breathtaking marvels of Gothic architecture. I’d always been a casual fan of cathedrals (who isn’t?) but after finishing Hugo’s masterpiece, I was determined to incorporate the Gothic church and all of its accompanying melodramatics into my own writing.…
