Commas with That and Which

I’ll answer two questions at the same time. Do you use that or which? Do you need commas with that and which

To answer both questions, you need to understand restrictive and non-restrictive phrases and clauses. Here are the answers in brief.

1. Use which and commas with non-restrictive phrases and clauses.

2. Use that and no commas with restrictive phrases and clauses.

Now, let find…

Back to Writing

I have now had my internet back properly for two weeks which is brilliant except for the fact that I seam to be doing more facebook than writing. Actually to tell the truth just facebook. So today I started my early morning walking again. I had stopped them for about a month. But I greatly missed going because it is so relaxing and gives me time to just breath.

Tomorrow I have promised myself I have to carry on writing my novel. I have missed writing and can not wait to get cracking…

Reconnect to the Past

RECONNECT TO PAST

On a lovely day almost forty years ago I drove south from my new home in Winslow, Arkansas, intent on revisiting my childhood past. Though Highway 71 had changed a lot, I had no trouble at all recognizing Old Creek Road. Back in the early days it was rutted and narrow and meandered through the remote hollow where more than a dozen families lived. I turned off with some reluctance. THE Gospel Game--1st chapter

    Chapter

THE game is everywhere, in every town. The place doesn’t have to be special at all; it just has to have willing participants.  Asbury Park was one of those places that welcomed the game—with open arms at that.  Asbury was a small town, not even a five-minute drive from one side of town to the other.  It was full of liquor stores, fast food restaurants, and people that had forgotten how to dream.  The streets…

Around the Globe with D.K. CHRISTI

Another week of hot temps and I have to get back from interviewing this week’s featured author in time to perform for the local fair crowd. When I pick up Ms. Christi, I know she’s taken lessons from otehr authors and instead of giving me a specific destination nudges me aside and takes control of the transporter.  Where do we end up? Well, I’ll let her own words…

Shades of Difference Matter—Elemental Ideas

When I teach the novel, Ceremony, by Leslie Marmon Silko, I usually teach about the Mother Goddess and the Hero’s Journey. Actually, it just gives me an excuse to talk about mythology, something I could do all day. Going over this, though, shows my students that every single heroic story follows the same skeletal structure (I could go on about the Hero’s Journey in more detail, but that would take up way too much room). The basics, though, involve the journey of the hero on his or her road…
