Around the Globe with WILLIAM DOONAN

As the rain pours today after a week of cold temps, and seeing this is Friday the 13th, I'm looking for a little Irish luck (and possibly an Irish lass to stroll by) as I pick up this week's featured author, William Doonan, and we transport to Kilronan which is on the Aron Islands of the west coast of Ireland. We're sitting in teh pub of a bed-and-breakfast Mr. Doonan…

Those Doggoned Sentences

I love dogs, and I love a good mystery. So when I came across the Chet and Bernie mystery series, I was ecstatic. The books are narrated from the perspective of Chet, the dog. I really enjoyed this as too many times in books and movies, animals are overly anthropomorphized.

I cuddled up at night with books one and two, Dog on It and Thereby Hangs a…

Flowers For Algernon : A Classic Odyssey That Should That Pulls So Many Heart Strings

Flowers For Algernon By Daniel Keyes

Overall Rating : A Man’s Odyssey that pulls so many heart strings

Okay if you have been reading my other smoothie reviews then you know I’m a sucker for science fiction. Or importantly classic science fiction. If you haven’t notice this by now, go back and read my Subterranean review. I couldn’t stop from praising it. So it’s not surprising I decided to read another classic scifi piece. This one is called Flowers For Algernon by Daniel…

Lord hear me as i pray

Lord hear me as i pray,

as i begin my day,

protect all the children that are abused,

let there tormentors be known through out

the news,

let no mercy come to those who hurt the little ones,

for those children that parish may they see the Holy One,

yes Lord protect them and guide us along the way,

forgive our foolishness as we begine to stray,

as for me i just want to see your face,

Holy Father,

Holy…

Saddness Overcomes Me

I see a storm coming..

it rages over me,

entices me,

toying and playing with me

I try to break free...

It's hold it to strong.

I surrender and embrace it fully knowing i will suffer..

tension builds....

I ponder..

feeding it angrily.

So much anguish stirs and a calmness swells in my eyes

It trickles downmy left cheek..

I taste its salt.

Alas, the storm with its fierce rage has relaxed as

sadness…

Little Girls

Little girls are made up of many things

glitter..for one,

It's shinny and pretty,

smiles, curtseys and cartwheels.

Little girls are all of that and more!e

Sunshine and rainbows are not even half

of what they are,

they are what makes you, me ,her, she, we, they and them and us

all young ladies

that flourish and grow into

beautiful women...

The Fight Scene

Near the end of August 2011, I attended the Killer Nashville writers’ conference. This was my third year and this time, besides meeting some wonderful people, authors, readers, and fans, I was honored to be invited to sit on a discussion panel. The seminar dealt with the subject of writing combat scenes.

For a moment I felt touch of an inferiority complex because the other three gentlemen on the panel had accumulated between them about 90 years of experience in the military…

What's in a Name?

I remember the day my mom and I were talking about my writing career. She asked me what name I planned to go by, what pen name I was going to use. “Maybe,” she said, “you should choose a name that’s easier to pronounce than Gligor. Don’t most writers do that?” Our conversation reminded me of an article I once read. It was an interview with actress, Jacqueline Bisset. When the interviewer told Jacqueline that he’d…

The 3 Cs of Effective Paragraphs

Every well-written paragraph needs three parts: context, content, and conclusion. These three parts are known collectively as the 3 Cs. When you use the 3 Cs, you present information logically, you help the reader understand your message, and you demonstrate the relevance of your idea.

Context. The first sentence…

Just a Little Longer

They had nothing to say to each other.  The time for any speaking had already passed.  Now here they were, at the end of all things.  In the dim light of the hospital room, the wife curled her fingers around the quiet, cool ones of her husband.

She couldn’t see beyond the tears.  There was nothing to see as it was.  They had walked all the paths of their life together and instead of looking…

Thompson on...One Writer's Journey to become a successful novelist!

Sometimes when I enter my writing area, in a corner of my office, it seems that words will not come and the critic inside me attacks my creativity with a constant bombardment of negative thoughts. "
