Interesting question! I can't recall any specific novels that feature this, but I have read stories where characters had out of body experiences. Maybe that is similar, but they weren't the central themes but rather aspects of the characters' adventures. No, perhaps it is something to consider.

Hi John,

One book that comes to mind where astral projection and many other paranormal aspects are spoken of is "River Runs Red" by Jeffrey J. Mariotte (Jove Books, New York, www.penguin.com, ISBN 978-0-515-14477-2).  It's a super interesting story that kept my attention to the point where I couldn't put it down - and that ain't easy to do.

Thanks Catherine and Mariah for both your feedback on this. I had a follow-up discussion with my friends on this and one recommended the movie Insidious, starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. I haven’t seen it yet, but I understand that astral projection is part of the story.

I wonder where the line draws between near-death-experience and astral projecting ... or maybe they are one and the same thing?

Hmm it is indeed a fine line. I think there is a difference, because to my mind astral projection is something you could achieve by putting yourself into a deep meditative trance. A near death experience usually happens after you receive trauma of some kind, although it has been known to happen to people while they sleep.

Yes, Catherine, there is a difference - you're very right there.  Astral projection can be done in many ways and to many levels, even to the point where the projector is seen by others in another area.  It can occur while one is awake or asleep.  It can be done at will or without us knowing it while we're sleeping.

Upon a few occassions, I've been reading for someone and been able to project.  I don't do this well or often because I just can't focus well enough. LOL  I've done it when I was asleep and just thought that I was dreaming about being in someone's house - like a friend's place.  When I talk to them a day or two later they'll tell me that they thought they were being visited by a spirit because this and that was going on.  I'll then recall my "dream" and begin to start asking them things that happened and they wonder how I knew.  I do apologize for this happening, but it's out of my control when I'm asleep (I try not to think of anyone before I go to sleep now - LOL - or I might go on 'walk-about' and that's just not cool).  They validate that it was indeed an astral visit because the stuff that happens never happens again and never happened before (don't worry, nothing kinky ever happened; I just moved things and opened doors).

NDE's do definitely occur when we're under trauma or being operated on.  Some surgeons have found that their patients have experienced them and have even put little tests in their operating rooms to try and get validation without informing any of their staff or fellow surgeons that the little tests are there.  Their patients will tell them later that they felt as if they were floating over the surgery and could see everything that the surgeon was doing, but wondered why in the heck there was this silly thing up near the ceiling behind whatever.  This then validates it for the surgeon that NDE's do occur.

This is indeed an interesting topic, John.  Thank you for bringing it up.

In my book, The Evangeline Heresy, there is a chapter with astral projection.  The character of Ethan Broughton is forcefully ejected from his body and looks down to see his inert form.

Astral projection was a big theme in Marie Corelli's books.  A Romance of Two Worlds comes to mind and Ardath.  I think she was Rosicrucian or something.  Corelli was a Victorian writer who amassed a fortune with her metaphysical novels and a favorite author of the Queen.

Oh,

I totally use it. Because my books center off an Egyptian myth and the gods and goddesses of that time period, I project the main three female, and male characters back and fourth, because of a certain goddess. I have it in every book so far in that series, its part of the plot. :)
